How to Clean a Patio Properly (Without Wrecking It)

The order of work matters more than the elbow grease.

1. Clear and dry-brush

Furniture off, debris swept. A stiff broom gets the loose stuff so the cleaner works on the surface, not the soil.

2. Apply the right cleaner

General grime: patio cleaner. Green film: moss & algae treatment. Black spots: black spot remover. Apply with a pressure sprayer and let it dwell as the label says — the chemistry does the work while you have a brew.

3. Agitate the stubborn bits

Wire brush on joints and spot stains only — don't scour the whole slab face.

4. Rinse

Hose or pressure washer on a fan setting. Keep the lance moving; don't blast pointing (mortar) joints directly.

5. Protect

Once dry, a black spot preventer slows the regrowth so next year is a rinse, not a restoration.
